Your Rhinoplasty Consultation
During your consultation Dr. Senderoff will ask you what you like and
don’t like about your nose. He will then ask you about your medical
history including whether you are taking any medications or have any
chronic medical conditions. An assessment of your nose will include any
breathing problems, chronic allergies or congestion or any past nasal
injuries or surgery. Next, the structure of your nose will be evaluated
with regard to size, shape, thickness of the skin, and the potential for
improvement with surgery. You will have the opportunity to ask questions
and view before and after photos.
The Rhinoplasty Surgery
Your operation will be performed in Board Certified Plastic Surgeon,
Douglas M. Senderoff MD's fully accredited outpatient surgical facility
located on Park Avenue South in Manhattan. The operation will be
performed as an outpatient usually under general anesthesia. Some
procedures can be performed under local anesthesia with intravenous
sedation depending on the extent of the surgery and the comfort level of
the patient. The operation can be performed through an internal approach
by making an incision within the nostrils. This technique is reserved
for patients who require mainly a hump removal with minimal tip work.
The open rhinoplasty involves an external skin incision across the
columella (the area of skin between the nostrils) which provides better
access to the delicate cartilage of the tip allowing more precise
shaping under direct view. After the nasal hump is reduced and the tip
is sculpted the nasal bones are usually moved closer together in order
to narrow the width of the nose. This maneuver called an infracture is
what patients commonly refer to as “breaking the nose” and is an
important part of the procedure. A plastic splint will be applied to the
newly operated nose in order to reduce the swelling and stabilize the
shape.
Recovery from Rhinoplasty
Your face will likely be swollen and bruised for several days. While
bleeding is rare the nose may drip blood for a few days until healing is
underway. A pain reliever will be prescribed. Most patients require
minimal amounts of pain medication and describe a throbbing feeling of
discomfort initially. After one week the splint will be removed from the
nose. It will take several weeks for the swelling to subside but the
shape of the nose will be apparent within the first 2 weeks. It may take
several months for the final subtle changes to become evident and for
the nasal tip to completely soften.
Insurance Information:
Reimbursement from your insurance carrier for your rhinoplasty (nose
job) may vary depending on the carrier, and the type of operation
performed. Generally, the companies will provide some type of
reimbursement if there is a degree of difficulty breathing, documented
with an anatomical problem that warrants correction at surgery. The
procedures that are usually covered are:
- Septal Surgery
- Correction of nasal fractures (either open or closed)
- Turbinate surgery
- Reconstruction of nasal deformities with cartilage grafts- This may be
applicable in patients who have had previous rhinoplasty procedures.
It is our office policy to help you contact your insurance company to
attempt to determine your reimbursement for your rhinoplasty surgery.
